Is eloping for you?
If you’re planning your big wedding and feeling stressed out or anxious for whatever reason, be it, family, too many guests, saying your vows in front of everyone, the money aspect, from juggling all of the decisions, you might be thinking, “Maybe we should just elope!” You might be considering an elopement to avoid all the stress, but at the end of the day you really need to ask yourself, is eloping for you?
Reasons to Elope
Most couples who elope have a big reason why they would prefer to get married away, just the two of them, most of the time that reason is money. The cost of running away for an intimate wedding and honeymoon is typically tens of thousands of pounds less than a big traditional wedding. Now a days, eloping has become so popular that even the dictionaries are changing the meaning of an elopement. Its no longer a couple running away and not telling anyone, an elopement can be what ever you want it to be. You can bring your parents and siblings to witness your wedding along with having a family holiday where ever you choose to go or you may choose to go by yourselves, say your vows in private while exploring a new beautiful land together. You can also come back and have a party with your friends and family and the best thing about that is you get to wear your wedding dress again.
Reasons Not to Elope
Tradition. Maybe you love the idea of a big church wedding, all your family and friends in the one room together, some you never see too often, some live far away and would love the opportunity to come together for a big occasion and of course lots and lots of wedding gifts.
If you and your partner decide that eloping is the right option for you, consider these variations that might avoid some of the pitfalls of eloping:
- Have a ceremony that’s just the two of you, but throw a reception afterward for all your friends and family.
- Hire a professional photographer to come with you , then send out great pictures of the event with your wedding announcement.
- Invite your parents and or best friends to come with you—the small group can go out for a celebratory dinner afterward.
If you do decide to elope, consider carefully where you want to marry and look into the marriage license laws. Many places don’t allow you to apply for a license and marry on the same day.
